Social Media: Blog Post 4

I am a huge champion of social media in schools. Basically, if it gets the students' attention then I'm all for it. Social media has completely changed the way we interact with each other. We can talk back and forth via Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, WhatsAPP, Snapchat. The list goes on and every day there is a new app being published. At Flowery Branch High School, the media specialist there, Ms. Laurie Stowe, is enthusiastic about social media. She updates the media center's twitter everyday tagging students, photos of school achievements, info about new books in the media center. She also added her twitter feed to the media center's website so visitors can see it and then follow their twitter.

Right now, there isn't an easier way to grab students' attention. You can promote SO much using social media. If you have a book club then create a Goodreads account for it. On their you can add books to read, students can discuss which book to read before the next meeting, etc. You can also share your reviews of books on Facebook, amazon, and twitter. If you don't want to use Goodreads then create a Facebook group! It is too easy to not have some sort of social media presence for your media center.

The point of promoting the Media Center is to get students in there! If they're playing on their phone between class and they see a tweet from the media center saying a new exciting young adult series just came in then they just might head over and check out a book. We need to remind students that we are there for them and that the media center is their domain. I like to see my media center as a growing business and I want to make sure my customers are happy. Every business now has a twitter or Facebook account their customers can go "like" or "follow". The media center shouldn't be any different!
